Type Ratings and Talent Supply: Which Aircraft Are Hardest to Staff Right Now?

Aircraft staffing is not simply a matter of finding an ATP certificate, a current medical, and enough flight time. In today’s aviation labor market, the most difficult searches are concentrated where a highly specific type rating, recent operational experience, insurance approval, schedule flexibility, and mission fit all need to align at once.


For corporate flight departments, Part 91 operators, Part 135 charter companies, aircraft-management firms, and private owners, the real question is not, “Are there pilots available?” It is, “Are there qualified, current, insurable, and genuinely interested pilots available for this aircraft and this operation?”


That distinction is why certain aircraft types remain materially harder to staff than others.


The FAA requires a type rating for pilots acting as PIC in large aircraft, turbojet-powered airplanes, powered-lift aircraft, and other aircraft designated by the Administrator. That makes the rating itself a baseline credential—not a guarantee that a candidate is operationally ready for a particular owner, route structure, insurer, or management culture.


Why Type-Rated Talent Is Tight


A type rating narrows the candidate pool by design. It confirms training and practical-test qualification on a specified aircraft type, but employers often need far more than the letters on a pilot certificate.


The most competitive roles typically require some combination of:


  • A current or recently exercised type rating.

  • Relevant PIC or SIC time in the specific aircraft or type family.

  • Part 91, Part 135, Part 121, international, or high-net-worth client experience.

  • Insurability against the operator’s minimums.

  • Strong recurrent-training history and documented proficiency.

  • Availability for a demanding schedule, short-notice trips, or a specific domicile.

  • A service mindset suited to executive, charter, or owner-flown flight departments.

  • Compatibility with a small, high-trust team.


This is occurring against a broader workforce constraint. Boeing’s 2025 Pilot and Technician Outlook projected a need for 660,000 new pilots and 710,000 new maintenance technicians globally from 2025 through 2044. In North America alone, the outlook projected demand for 119,000 new pilots and 123,000 new technicians.


Business aviation faces an additional challenge: it competes with airlines, OEMs, MROs, and government operations for the same experienced professionals. NBAA has identified pilots as the leading area of workforce-shortage concern compared with maintenance, safety-management, and ground-operations employees.


The Hardest Aircraft Categories to Staff


There is no universal “hardest type rating.” Talent supply changes by region, operator reputation, compensation, schedule, fleet concentration, insurance requirements, and whether a role is home-based or requires relocation. Still, several aircraft categories consistently create the most difficult searches.

The common theme is simple: the harder an operation is to replicate, the smaller the practical talent pool becomes.


The Most Difficult Pilot Searches

Ultra-long-range, large-cabin aircraft


Ultra-long-range aircraft are frequently among the most competitive pilot searches because the job demands are broader than aircraft handling alone. A captain flying a Global 7500, Gulfstream G650, G700, G800, Falcon 8X, or similar platform may be expected to manage intercontinental missions, international handling, oceanic procedures, complex alternates, high-profile passengers, evolving schedules, and long-duty-day risk.


These pilots are also attractive to many employers at once:


  • Private owners and family offices.

  • Corporate flight departments.

  • Aircraft-management companies.

  • Premium Part 135 operators.

  • Government and head-of-state flight operations.

  • OEM demonstration, training, and support organizations.


A candidate with recent PIC time, a clean training record, strong international experience, and a proven record in a discreet owner environment has a narrow but exceptionally valuable profile. These candidates are often passive; they are not applying broadly to public advertisements.


For that reason, an employer may see dozens of resumes yet still have very few viable finalists.


Challenger 300/350 and Gulfstream G280


The Challenger 300/350 family and Gulfstream G280 occupy a particularly competitive part of the market. These aircraft are popular across corporate and charter operations because they offer transcontinental capability, efficient operating economics, and strong cabin utility. Their popularity creates demand for qualified crews across many bases and operators.


The difficulty is not necessarily that pilots do not hold the relevant ratings. The challenge is finding pilots who simultaneously have:


  • Meaningful PIC time.

  • Recent Part 135 or high-tempo corporate experience.

  • The ability to meet insurer standards.

  • A schedule fit for the operation.

  • A willingness to relocate or commute.

  • A compensation expectation aligned with the budget.


A flight department that delays interviews, withholds salary information, or presents an unpredictable schedule without offsetting benefits is likely to lose qualified candidates to more responsive competitors.


Gulfstream GV, G550, G450, and older large-cabin fleets


Legacy large-cabin fleets can be deceptively challenging. Aircraft such as the GV, G550, G450, Challenger 604/605, Falcon 900, Falcon 2000, and Legacy 600/650 have established global operating histories and experienced pilot communities. But that does not always translate into abundant available talent.


Many pilots with meaningful time on these platforms have transitioned to newer aircraft, airline positions, management roles, or retirement. Others may be technically qualified but not current, may be unavailable for the required domicile, or may not meet an operator’s insurance or international-mission profile.


Operators should avoid treating the type rating as an all-or-nothing filter. A pilot with recent G650, G500, G600, Global, Falcon, or other comparable large-cabin experience may be an excellent transition candidate if the operation can support type training and a structured onboarding plan.


Niche, legacy, and low-density types


Some of the hardest searches involve aircraft with smaller active fleets or geographically dispersed operators. Examples may include certain Hawker, Learjet, Falcon, Citation, Legacy, and special-mission aircraft variants.


The issue is a limited active network. Fewer aircraft in routine service generally means:


  • Fewer pilots gaining new time on the type.

  • Fewer instructors and training opportunities.

  • Fewer current captains seeking a move.

  • More reliance on experienced contract pilots.

  • Greater risk that one resignation disrupts the operation.


For a niche aircraft, a narrowly written job posting can unintentionally eliminate the strongest available candidates. A more effective approach is to separate true non-negotiables—such as ATP, PIC experience, insurance thresholds, and international eligibility—from skills that can be developed through transition training.


Single-pilot and owner-operated jets


Single-pilot-capable aircraft can pose a different staffing problem. The pool may include qualified pilots, but the job can require unusually high levels of judgment, autonomy, flexibility, and relationship management.


A single-pilot operator may need a professional who can safely handle flight planning, passenger coordination, ground-service communication, cabin readiness, changing itineraries, and independent decision-making without the redundancy of a two-pilot crew environment.


The strongest candidates are not always the ones with the highest total time. They are often those with disciplined operational habits, owner-service experience, stable decision-making, and comfort operating in a highly autonomous role.


Why “Current” Matters More Than a Rating Alone


A type rating is an essential credential, but it should be evaluated in context. A pilot may hold a rating on a particular aircraft while having limited or outdated operating experience. That does not make the pilot unqualified; it means the employer should assess training recency, total time in type, PIC versus SIC experience, recurrent history, and how closely the pilot’s recent work resembles the actual mission.


For example, a Global captain who has flown international Part 91 missions during the past year may be a stronger fit for a worldwide owner operation than a candidate whose Global type rating is valid but who has not flown the aircraft in several years.


Similarly, a Challenger 350 SIC with current Part 135 experience, excellent recurrent records, and strong leadership potential may be more valuable than a nominally typed PIC who lacks recent operational exposure or cannot meet insurance standards.


A practical screening framework should include:


  1. Certificate status, ATP eligibility, medical status, and right-to-work verification.

  2. Exact type-rating designation and any relevant limitations.

  3. Total time, turbine time, total time in type, PIC time in type, and recent time.

  4. Part 91, Part 135, Part 121, military, or special-mission background.

  5. Recurrent-training provider, date, outcome, and training-history review.

  6. International, oceanic, RVSM, MNPS/HLA, and high-altitude operational exposure where relevant.

  7. Schedule, commute, domicile, compensation, and travel expectations.

  8. Professional fit: communication, discretion, customer service, and safety culture.


The FAA also recognizes that type-specific training requirements may apply beyond the initial rating; pilots must receive and log the required training and obtain an instructor endorsement before serving as PIC where such training is specified.


Maintenance Talent Is Often Equally Constrained


The staffing conversation should not stop with the flight deck. Aircraft availability depends just as heavily on maintenance professionals, avionics specialists, inspectors, directors of maintenance, and technical records personnel.

The most difficult maintenance searches often involve:


  • A&P technicians with aircraft-specific large-cabin, turbine, or OEM experience.

  • Avionics technicians familiar with advanced flight decks and troubleshooting workflows.

  • Inspection Authorization holders.

  • Directors of Maintenance with Part 135 or high-complexity Part 91 experience.

  • Technicians able to support AOG events, rotating schedules, and mobile field work.

  • Specialists who can work across legacy and modern aircraft systems.


A new aircraft delivery, fleet expansion, or Part 135 certificate growth plan should include a maintenance workforce strategy from the beginning. Hiring after the aircraft arrives is usually too late.


What Employers Can Do Now


The strongest hiring results come from treating staffing as an operational-readiness initiative rather than a last-minute vacancy.


Define the real requirement


Be precise about the aircraft, mission profile, domicile, schedule, compensation structure, travel expectations, and operational certificate. At the same time, distinguish between required qualifications and preferred experience.


For example, “current CL-30 PIC with 1,000 hours in type” may be genuinely necessary for one insurer or mission profile. For another operation, “ATP with strong turbine PIC experience and willingness to complete CL-30 training” could significantly expand the candidate pool without compromising safety.


Start before the need becomes urgent


For a new aircraft type, replacement captain, or fleet transition, begin talent planning well before the desired start date. One aviation staffing resource recommends starting the process approximately 90 to 120 days before aircraft delivery to allow time for sourcing, screening, type-rating training, and operational readiness.


This is particularly important for long-range, niche, and owner-sensitive aircraft roles, where the best candidates may need to coordinate training, relocation, notice periods, or contract commitments.


Compete on the complete employment package


Compensation matters, but pilots and maintenance professionals also evaluate schedule quality, predictability, leadership, training investment, culture, career progression, travel burden, and the professionalism of the operation.


Employers should be prepared to communicate:


  • Base pay, bonuses, per diem, overtime, and benefits.

  • Training and recurrent-training commitments.

  • Rotation, home-base, and commute policies.

  • Expected annual flight hours and trip duration.

  • International, holiday, and short-notice expectations.

  • The condition of the aircraft, support team, and maintenance infrastructure.

  • Long-term fleet plans and advancement opportunities.


Build a bench, not just a requisition


A one-off recruitment process creates risk. Flight departments should maintain active relationships with contract pilots, emerging SIC talent, instructors, maintenance professionals, and adjacent-type candidates before a resignation, delivery, or schedule change creates an urgent need.


Public job boards remain useful for visibility and market intelligence.
