When flight departments, charter operators, and private owners shop the ultra-long-range segment, two aircraft consistently make the shortlist: the Dassault Falcon 8X and the Gulfstream G600.

Both jets connect continents nonstop, both carry flagship-level cabins, and both command premium crews. Yet they take remarkably different engineering paths to get there — one a nimble trijet born of fighter-jet DNA, the other a near-supersonic twinjet built around one of the most advanced flight decks in business aviation.

In this in-depth comparison, we break down every published specification — range, speed, runway performance, cabin dimensions, weights, engines, avionics, and operating costs — and then look at what each aircraft means for the people who fly, maintain, and staff them. Because at OSI Recruit, we know that behind every great aircraft is an even greater crew.

Two Philosophies, One Mission

The Dassault Falcon 8X entered service in 2016 as the flagship of the Falcon family. It is a stretched, longer-legged evolution of the Falcon 7X, retaining Dassault's signature trijet configuration and a digital flight control system derived directly from the Rafale fighter (Dassault Aviation). Dassault positions the 8X as the efficiency and airport-access champion of the ultra-long-range class.

The Gulfstream G600 received its FAA type and production certificates on June 28, 2019, and was delivered to its first customer that August (General Dynamics). Built on Gulfstream's clean-sheet GVII platform alongside the G500, the G600 emphasizes speed, cabin volume, and the award-winning Symmetry Flight Deck with active control sidesticks.

Range: The Headline Numbers

Range is where marketing claims need careful reading, because the two manufacturers quote different cruise speeds and crew loads.

·       Falcon 8X: 6,450 nm (11,945 km) at Mach 0.80 with 8 passengers, 3 crew, and NBAA IFR reserves (Dassault Falcon). That is roughly 14 hours aloft — enough for Beijing–New York, Hong Kong–London, Shanghai–Seattle, or London–São Paulo nonstop (Dassault Falcon backgrounder).

·       Gulfstream G600: 6,600 nm (12,223 km) at Mach 0.85 with 8 passengers, 4 crew, and NBAA IFR reserves (Gulfstream). Even at its high-speed cruise of Mach 0.90, the G600 still covers 5,600 nm (10,371 km) — enough to link New York–Dubai, London–Beijing, or Los Angeles–Shanghai nonstop (Gulfstream G600 spec sheet).

The takeaway: The G600 holds a 150 nm range advantage on paper — and, critically, it achieves its maximum range while cruising Mach 0.05 faster. On a 6,000 nm mission, that speed difference can shave 45 minutes or more off block time. The Falcon 8X counters with exceptional fuel efficiency; Dassault states the trijet is up to 15% more fuel-efficient than any other aircraft in the ultra-long-range segment.

41,000 ft (12,497 m)

The G600 is simply the faster airplane. With an MMO of Mach 0.925 and a high-speed cruise of Mach 0.90, it has claimed more than 20 city-pair speed records, including Savannah to Geneva in 7 hours 21 minutes (Flycraft). The Falcon 8X's Mach 0.90 MMO is no slouch, but its optimum long-range cruise sits at Mach 0.80, a full 0.05 Mach behind the Gulfstream.

Both aircraft cruise at up to 51,000 feet — well above airline traffic and most weather.

Runway Performance: Where the Falcon Fights Back

This is the Falcon 8X's home turf, and the numbers are striking.

Runway Metric

Falcon 8X

Gulfstream G600

Takeoff Distance (SL, ISA, MTOW)

5,880 ft (1,792 m)

5,700 ft (1,737 m)

Steep Approach Capability

Up to 6 degrees (London City approved)

Standard approaches

The 8X's 107-knot approach speed and certified 6-degree steep-approach capability let it operate from challenging fields such as London City — airports the G600 typically cannot serve. Dassault's fighter-derived digital flight controls and trijet redundancy give operators access to roughly 500 more U.S. airports than key competitors (Flycraft). For owners who value doorstep access over raw cruise speed, this is a decisive advantage.

Cabin Experience

The G600 offers the larger living space: 1,884 cubic feet of cabin volume versus 1,695 for the Falcon, a cabin nearly two and a half feet longer, up to four living areas, and berthing for up to ten passengers (Gulfstream). Its 14 signature panoramic oval windows flood the cabin with natural light, and Gulfstream quotes a cabin altitude of just 3,255 feet (992 m) while cruising at 41,000 feet — among the lowest in the industry.

The Falcon 8X answers with width — at 7 ft 8 in it is marginally wider than the G600 — and with more than 30 available cabin configurations, including three galley sizes, a crew-rest option, and a shower-equipped lavatory (Dassault Falcon backgrounder). Dassault's acoustic engineering also makes the 8X one of the quietest cabins in business aviation.

Flight Deck and Pilot Perspective

Pilots tend to have strong opinions about both aircraft — for good reason.

Falcon 8X: The EASy IV flight deck, built on Honeywell Primus Epic, pairs with a digital flight control system derived from Dassault's Rafale fighter. The optional FalconEye Combined Vision System blends synthetic and enhanced vision in a head-up display, enabling approaches in low visibility (Dassault Aviation). Under FAA rules, the Falcon 8X shares the DA-7X pilot type rating with the Falcon 7X, so 7X-rated pilots transition through a differences course rather than a full initial rating (FAA Flight Standardization Board).

Gulfstream G600: The Symmetry Flight Deck introduced active control sidesticks — a first in civil aviation — along with ten touchscreen displays and extensive fly-by-wire integration. The FAA assigns the same "GVII" pilot type rating to both the G500 and G600, giving operators valuable crew flexibility across the two fleets (FAA FSB Report GVII).

These type-rating structures matter enormously for hiring. A G500/G600 common rating widens the candidate pool for Gulfstream operators, while Falcon operators often recruit from the loyal, experienced 7X community. Our aviation recruitment team tracks type-rated pilot availability across both fleets daily.

Acquisition and Operating Costs

Cost Category

Falcon 8X

Gulfstream G600

List Price (new, approx.)

$62.5 million (Q2 2025)

$59.5 million (Q2 2025)

Typical Pre-Owned Range

~$40–50 million

~$45–65 million

Variable Cost per Hour

Lower fuel burn (~347 gal/hr)

~$6,200–7,100/hr

Total Annual Budget (400–450 hrs)

~$4.1 million

~$3.4–4.0 million

Cost comparisons vary by source and utilization, but two patterns hold: the Falcon 8X burns meaningfully less fuel per hour (three smaller engines, lighter airframe), while the G600's twinjet configuration means one fewer engine to overhaul and enroll on maintenance programs.

Budget-conscious flight departments should model both against their actual mission profile — and remember that crew quality, not the airframe, is usually the biggest variable in dispatch reliability. We covered that in The Real Cost of a Bad Hire in Private Aviation.

What Each Aircraft Means for Crews and Hiring

Both fleets are growing, and both compete for the same elite talent pool:

·       Pilots. Ultra-long-range captains with DA-7X or GVII type ratings command some of the highest salaries in corporate aviation. See our 2026 aviation salary benchmarks for current pay data. Browse live openings for Falcon 8X pilot jobs and Gulfstream G600 pilot jobs on AllAviationJob.com.

·       Flight attendants. Fourteen-hour missions demand corporate cabin crew trained in international service, safety, and discretion. Explore corporate flight attendant openings.

·       Maintenance technicians. PW307D and PW815GA engine experience is in short supply, and both airframes reward factory-trained talent. Search aircraft technician roles and avionics positions.

·       Schedulers and dispatchers. Global missions require global support teams. See scheduler and dispatcher jobs.

The Verdict

There is no single winner — only the right aircraft for a given mission profile.

Choose the Falcon 8X if your operation values airport access (London City, short fields, steep approaches), fuel efficiency, trijet redundancy on oceanic routes, and a wider, highly configurable cabin.

Choose the Gulfstream G600 if your priorities are speed (Mach 0.90 all day), maximum range at faster cruise, the largest cabin volume in this matchup, panoramic natural light, and G500/G600 common-type-rating crew flexibility.

Either way, the aircraft is only half the equation. The crew you put in the cockpit — and in the cabin, and in the hangar — determines whether that $60 million asset delivers its promised performance.
